Victor Osimhen Biography

Victor Osimhen was born to Edo State-born parents in Lagos on December 29, 1998. He is the last child of six children. The family struggled while living in Lagos, where the mother sold sachet water to supplement her meagre income.

Victor, who was only a child then, was forced to stand in the sweltering sun in Lagos traffic.

He grew up in Olusosun, a small neighbourhood near Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, with his brother Andrew and four other brothers. One of Africa’s biggest dumpsites is located in this community.

Victor Osimhen hustled and sold sachet water and other home goods on the streets during his formative years to raise money for his education and his family’s survival. He learnt how to play football while watching his elder brother at a tender age.

Career

Osimhen began his professional career with the Ultimate Strikers Academy in Lagos, Nigeria. He attracted attention for his efforts at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup and, in January 2016, signed a pre-contract with VfL Wolfsburg.

According to the contract, he would join the team in January 2017.

On January 5, 2017, Osimhen formally accepted a three-and-a-half-year contract with the squad to keep him there until June 2020. Osimhen made his Bundesliga debut for Wolfsburg on May 13, coming on in the 59th minute against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The next week, on the penultimate matchday of the 2016–17 season, Osimhen made his professional debut against Hamburger SV in a crucial relegation match.

He assumed Sebastian Jung’s defensive position with the score tied. Then, Wolfsburg was edged by a late goal, sending them into a playoff against Eintracht Braunschweig for survival.

During the first half of the 2017–18 season, Osimhen played in five games and was a part of 12 of the 17 matchday squads. He played all 90 minutes of the 1-0 triumph over Hannover on January 28, 2018, to make his full Bundesliga debut.

Osimhen made two more starts throughout the rest of the season, playing the entirety of the match against Werder Bremen on February 11 and being replaced by Daniel Didavi midway through the match against Hertha Berlin on March 31.

He was injured for Wolfsburg, which prevented him from taking part in the relegation playoff. Additionally, he played in one DFB Pokal match for Wolfsburg, filling in for Josuha Guilavogui for the final ten minutes of their 1-0 quarterfinal loss to Schalke. Osimhen had shoulder surgery on May 2, ending his season with 12 appearances in the Bundesliga.

Osimhen participated in summer trials with the defending champions Club Brugge and Zulte Waregem of Belgium.

On August 22, 2018, Osimhen joined Belgian club Charleroi on a season-long loan deal after failing to score in any of his 16 appearances with Wolfsburg. He replaced the departing Kaveh Rezaei, who was sold to Club Brugge after scoring three goals in the season’s first three games. However, a summer bout with malaria affected his physical condition, and neither club decided to take him on loan.

On September 1, Osimhen made his professional debut against Excel Mouscron, a late cameo to replace Jérémy Perbet. He made his complete debut on September 22 and beat Waasland-Beveren with a backheel to score his first goal as a professional.

Osimhen signed with Lille OSC in July 2019 and made his Ligue 1 debut for the team on August 11, 2019, scoring a brace in their 2-1 victory over Nantes.

Osimhen was awarded the Ligue 1 Player of the Month for September 2019. He won Lille’s Player of the Season title on June 2, 2020, after receiving the most fan votes.

On October 2, 2019, Osimhen scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League during a 1-2 home loss to Chelsea.

With 13 goals in 25 Ligue 1 games and 18 goals overall, the Nigerian was Lille’s highest scorer at the end of the season. Many predicted Osimhen would soon be vying for the African Footballer of the Year award due to his excellent goal-scoring performances.

Osimhen was on the Nigeria under-17 team that triumphed at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. He won the Golden Boot and Silver Ball awards after scoring 10 goals in seven games. His efforts also brought him the CAF Youth Player of the Year award in 2015.

Following a successful start to his loan spell at Charleroi, Osimhen was invited by Gernot Rohr for the November 2018 international break. He started their friendly win over Uganda. Osimhen made his senior debut for Nigeria in a 2-0 loss against South Africa on June 10, 2017. He missed Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign due to his inconsistent season at Wolfsburg.

Osimhen was released from the Super Eagles squad in March 2019 to play for the Nigerian U23 team since they were trailing Libya by two goals. He scored thrice in the rematch in Asaba. Osimhen was featured on both the tentative 25-man roster and the tournament’s final 25-man roster for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

He replaced injured Odion Ighalo at halftime in the team’s 1-0 triumph over Tunisia in the match for third place. He played in the competition for a total of 45 minutes.
