“Turning out to be a massive L”: Expendables 4 Joins Sylvester Stallone’s Hall of Shame With Embarrassing Box Office Run

Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables 4 suffered from a major box office disaster after it ended with a final domestic gross of only $16 million. Aside from the depressing figure, it also earned a lot of negative critical reviews, making the film impossible to redeem anymore.

Stallone’s latest action movie franchise starred Jason Statham, Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson, Megan Fox and Dolph Lundgren. But, even this lineup cannot save the movie from becoming one of the lowest-grossing films of the year.

Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables 4 Flops Hard At The Box Office

It is safe to say that The Expendables has lost its charm among audiences as evident in the box office result. The fourth installment received the worst reviews of all the films in the franchise, with Rotten Tomatoes recording a 14% rating.

The lack of fresh ideas has become the culprit of the movie’s downfall. Fans know from the beginning that The Expendables films are dependent on the nostalgia of the past and the collaboration of renowned action stars of the earlier generation.

The appeal of the film is not really in the action sequences but in the star-studded cast. Think of the older installments with Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis. They were the ones that made the movies remarkable. The new cast has barely the power to pull viewers or invoke a sense of the 90’s action dramas.

Wow $100M, they must have paid the actors a ton to do this movie because that money wasn’t spent on special effects that’s for sure.

the worst action movie i’ve ever watched. i don’t know how they managed to fuck it up so badly

Damn
The film is bad but $100 budget whoa
Like Sly & Jason what was ya thinking making another one 🤔

— Joseph Reid (@reidjoey11) October 30, 2023

$100M seems like a scam, because it looks like it was made on a $10M budget, with the majority of it on a Green Screen set.

Indeed, Stallone’s The Expendables 4 ended up incurring more losses than wins after it earned $50.8 million worldwide against a production budget of $100 million.

Sylvester Stallone Was Not Completely Attached To The Project

The Expendables 4 marks Sylvester Stallone’s last appearance in the action franchise. He was originally part of the cast, but due to creative differences about the direction and screenplay, he initially left.

There was also another factor why the action star could not get along with the studio. Apparently, Stallone’s ideas for the VFX and CGI departments did not coincide with the plans of the producer.

This was a major issue for the actor who has been running and writing for the franchise since its conception. Stallone was hardly in The Expendables 4, and he also did not return to write the fourth film’s script.
