Toussaint Charbonneau was a trader. He was the only white man in the Mandan Indian territory. In 1803, he settled in the Five Villages in Mandan country. He had two Native wives, Sacagawea and Otter Woman. He accompanied the Lewis and Clark expedition with Sacagawea. They returned to South Dakota after the expedition returned to Missouri. In 1839, he appeared in Saint Louis to ask the Indian Bureau for back salaries.
