Who needs armor when you can have magic, technique, and rage? In Baldur’s Gate 3, quite a few classes forgo any armor proficiencies in favor of empowered abilities that would be interrupted by protective gear. Barbarians, Monks and most mages instead seek out enchanted articles of clothing meant to enhance their play styles, but at the risk of decreased protection.

Clothing items offer no bonus to base armor class. While that has no impact on your ability to resist saving throws, regular attacks are more likely to hit you. The trade-off is that clothing items usually have powerful enchantments that make you either not care about getting hit, or gain the power to destroy all your enemies before they can do any real damage. 10 The Mighty Cloth

Immovable Bull Strength

The Mighty Cloth lives up to its name by making any who wear it stronger in body. Those who don the cloth will find their Strength increased by two, to a maximum of 20. It won’t help you transcend mortal limits, but when you get it in act two at Last Light Inn, you’re normally around level five or six.

This robe can boost your strength to 20 as you wait for the next ability score improvement. You also can’t be moved against your will. Bull’s Rush is the garb’s special move, letting you charge into an enemy and knock them prone.

9 Infernal Robe

Burning Protection At A High Price

A robe from Hell can grant powerful protection so early in the game, but it comes at a high price. To get the Infernal Robe, you must Kill Karlachs and report to Wyll it's been done. Through some juggling, you can get it and resurrect Karlach, making both available, but that has quite a few steps.

The Robe itself boosts your AC by one through enchantment, and grants you resistance to fire. You can also cast Fire Shield, making any who attack you in melee get burned. While the cost is high, it’s undeniable that the Infernal Robe is powerful.

8 The Graceful Cloth

Gain Catlike Dexterity

No matter which class you’re playing, Dexterity is always an important stat. Even without armor, a high dexterity can save you from a lot of harm. The Graceful Cloth gives you an all-around boost to Dexterity, raising it by two to a maximum of 20. You’re also under the effect of Cat’s Grace while wearing it, giving you advantage on all dexterity checks and halving fall damage.

You also gain the passive Nimble as a Cat, boosting your jump distance and giving you a small boost to your Dexterity saves. You can purchase, or steal, the Graceful Cloth from Lady Esther on the Mountain Pass. You get it early enough that the boost can push you to a 20 in dexterity before your second stat boost.

7 Enraging Heart Garb

Your Constitution is arguably just as important, if not more so, than dexterity. It is the main stat that determines how much health you’ll get when you level up. In addition to the health provided by your class, you gain your constitution modifier in hit points every time you level up. Any boost, or penalty, to that stat will impact your hitpoint maximum.

The Enraging Heart Garb raises your constitution by two, enough to boost your health. It’s made for barbarians, so raging will take those extra hit points even further. As you play though Baldur’s Gate, you’ll notice that water makes you wet. A shocking revelation to be sure, but as it turns out being wet is extremely detrimental to staying alive when mages can summon icy cold and lightning bolts at will. Wet enemies will have vulnerability to lightning and cold damage. The Wavemother’s Robe puts you in position to capitalize on that as a quest reward from the Wavemother in Act three.

The Bonespike Garb is the endgame clothing you’ll want to get for your Barbarian. It reduces all incoming damage by two, and that’s applied after resistance cuts damage first. Slabjaw Determination makes your Barbarian gain 15 temporary hitpoints wherever they rage, making them even tougher.

When enemies are foolish enough to attack you in melee, they take piercing damage equal to your constitution modifier. It increases your durability, and your damage just by wearing it. Since Barbarians are as straightforward as they come in combat, the garb adds no extra actions you need to do. It just makes you better.

Spell Boost And Protection For Casters

For casters, there is no better robe than the Robe of the Weave. While still counting as clothing, it boosts your AC to a base 12, the level of light armor. While that’s good, you’re really wearing it for the boost to your spellcasting. Your spell save DC and spell attacks both increase by one while wearing the robe.

Whenever you succeed a saving throw against a spell, you consume part of its essence to heal a d6. When you get to the endgame, you want your arcane caster in this robe. You can get it from Ramazinth’s tower by dispeling a Globe of Invulnerability.

1 Vest Of Soul Rejuvenation
