Even after scoring a solid victory over the Tennessee Titans, the Pittsburgh Steelers couldn’t get to enjoy it after being evaluated for 10 penalties for 80 yards. Though the Steelers secured another win this season, they did it in an ugly manner, that only they can. Well, it seems like the team had to work on a lot of things.
Despite the players’ injuries, they would have to face penalties on both sides of the ball. Admitting the mistakes, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the issues with the Steelers. During the postgame press conference, Tomlin said:
Obviously it could have been cleaner, first and foremost from a penalty perspective.
He elaborated:
Part of being a tough team to beat is not kicking your own butt, and we’ve been doing that, and we’ve got to own that. We’ll bring some officials into our practice setting in order to be cleaner, because that was catastrophic, really, to a lot of our efforts.
The Steelers coach asserted that this has been a lesson for them, and he and the whole team look forward to reviewing it and learning from it. Moreover, in the next practice setting of the Steelers, the team ought to have officials present, as Tomlin said:
We'll bring some officials into our practice setting in an effort to be cleaner because that was catastrophic in a lot of instances to our efforts tonight.
When it comes to penalties, the Steelers were ranked the fourth-best team in the league, with average penalties of five per game, according to in-game statistics by Amazon. However, against the Titans, its number doubled. For now, as the team has some time off, they will get a chance to clear things up and focus on playing cleaner football next time.
What were the penalty problems of the Pittsburgh Steelers?
As the Steelers got an extra point attempt late in the game, they scored it from the 20-yard line. On witnessing a good return, the opponent also tried the extra point attempt, but from a 48-yard line. Though the field was short, the Steelers’ defense held and secured a 4-and-out to gain the ball back. For this unsportsmanlike conduct, the offensive tackle of Steelers, Broderick Jones was called.
Moving forward in the last drive of the game, the Steelers tried but failed another fourth down. However, Joey Porter Jr. was called in for holding that prolonged Titans’ drive. They drove it to the red zone, but the good thing for the Steelers was that Kwon Alexander was there, who intercepted the ball and ended the game. The Steelers’ defense came out strongly, but they still need to work on easing their job and cleaning up.
The penalty issue that the Steelers faced was about the fourth quarter. As they committed several fouls during the game, and also gave 40 yards to the Titans on the drive, leading to a field goal for themselves.
