Sally Harvey, 76
Sally Marie Harvey of Opportunity died Monday evening in St. James Healthcare.
She was born in Keewatin, Minn., on June 14, 1926, to George and Sally Anderson. She came to Butte as a girl and received her education in Butte schools.
Sally had worked as a cook in Butte restaurants. During World War II she was a welder in the Portland ship yards. After the war she was mainly a homemaker but also worked as a custodian for the Butte school district, a nurs ing assistant, and as a school bus aide in Anaconda.
She enjoyed canning, crocheting, cooking and baking, sewing and crafts.
She married Arthur Harvey in Butte on Sept. 8, 1944; he survives in Opportunity. Other survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mickey and Buddy Byrd, Townsend, Arthell and Bernie Hewitt, Butte, Sandy and Dick Wilson, Anaconda, Judy Harvey, Tacoma, Wash., Ginger Haus, Forsyth; sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Peggy Harvey, Anaconda, Don and Tracy Harvey, Anaconda, Ron and Judy Harvey, Opportunity, Dan Harvey, Anaconda; numerous grandchildren, including Bernie Hewitt, Gina Christman, Matthew Haus, Jonathan Haus and Sabrina Haus; numerous great-grand children; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sons Art Harvey and Tim Harvey, daughter Vickey Taylor, brothers Harold and Al Anderson, and grandson Daniel Harvey.
Her remains have been cremated in Butte and no ser vices are planned at this time.

William Spehar, 90
DILLON — William “ Bill” Spehar died Tuesday in Red Lodge.
Bill was born March 16, 1912, on Thomson Avenue in Dillon. He was the third son of Nicholas and Antonia Spehar. Bill had one older sis ter, two older brothers, and two younger brothers, who are deceased. He lived on a 10-acre farm off Hall Road from 1912 to 1921. Bill attended the Bagley School while living at this homestead. The family moved in 1924 to a ranch off Carrigan Lane, where he attended the Blacktail School. Bill worked with his family on the ranch. Later they moved to a ranch six miles south of Dillon, where he attended the Riverside School. Bill worked with his family on the ranch.
In 1939 Bill met Loretta Grills from Miles City and they married April 5, 1941, in Butte. They bought the Frank Spehar ranch in Glen, later selling the place in 1946 and moved into Glen and opened a repair shop. Bill later worked as a mechanic in several major businesses.
Bill then opened his own business at 227 N. Washington and later opened a business at his residence. Bill worked from 1968 to 1984 for Western Montana College as a stationary engineer, retiring in 1984. It was the only time they closed the school for the afternoon and partied with Bill and his family. Bill semi retired from his shop in 1993.
Bill helped a good many people who could not pay and instructed many youngsters in the trade of mechanics. At one time he was known as the best Jeep mechanic in Beaverhead County.
Survivors are his wife, Loretta of 61 years; daughter, Tona and son-in-law Allen Lawson; sons, Jay and daugh ter-in-law Treasa Spehar, David Spehar; granddaugh ters, Barbara Barthel of Dillon and Ronda Huffman of Las Vegas; numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his grandson in 2000. Bill will be greatly missed and loved by all.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Brundage Funeral Home, Dillon, with a luncheon to be served at St. Rose Family Center.
Vernon Steffan, 85
PHILIPSBURG — Memorial services for Vernon R. Steffan will be conducted from the Granite County Cultural Center at 2 p.m. Friday with Pastor Delbert Abbey officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be held at a later date in the Philipsburg Cemetery.
Vernon died peacefully Sunday in the Granite County Medical Center in Philipsburg after a long illness.
Vernon Robert was born May 17, 1917, in Pioneer to Emil and Minnie (Stiner) Steffan. At the age of 2 Vernon's family moved to Philipsburg, where Vernon was reared and educated, graduating from Granite High School in 1935. In 1940 he married Sophia “ Anne” Hoyendahl in Philipsburg and they were blessed with three children.
He enlisted in the Army on Feb. 16, 1945, and was sta tioned in northern Japan and the Philippines in the Quartermaster Corps. He was discharged at the rank of sergeant on Aug. 5, 1946.
Vernon worked in and out of the local mines and also worked for the Bureau of Mines. He was a hoisting engineer most of those years in the mines. Vernon coached basketball for two years at Granite High School. In 1969 the Steffan family moved to the Galen State Hospital cam pus where Vernon worked as a stationary engineer and Anne worked as a nurse until they both retired in 1983 and returned to Philipsburg.
Vernon was a pleasant man with a good sense of humor and always greeted you with a smile. He loved hunting, fishing, playing cribbage and was an avid sportsman. He retired from the Galen and Philipsburg Volunteer Fire departments. He was a past member of the Philipsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2935.
Survivors include his wife, Anne at the Philipsburg home; son, Robert and wife Janet of Philipsburg; daugh ter, Carol and husband Roger Billadeau of Superior; grand children, Sonja and husband James Squires of Lancaster, Calif., Bobbi Steffan of Fairbanks, Alaska, Scott Billadeau of Big Arm, and Brooke Billadeau of Kirkland, Wash.; sister, Montana LaHood of Butte; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives.
His son Randy, who died in 1993, parents, three brothers, and four sisters preceded Vernon in death.
Services and cremation are under the care of the KT Riddle Funeral Homes, Anaconda.

Joan Steyh, 58
Joan E. Steyh of Dewey died Monday morning in St. James Healthcare.
She was born in Butte Feb. 9, 1944, to Frank and Ila (Byrnes) Clark. She attended schools in Butte and graduated from Butte High.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Ila Clark and her grandmother Loretta “ Mum” Byrnes, to whom she was especially close.
She loved her job driving school bus and always had a smile on her face. She loved the children and nature. Joan enjoyed her birds, all kinds of crafts, taught ceramics and especially enjoyed crocheting and intarsia. She loved living in Dewey and its people, but the greatest love of her life was her family, especially her daughters and grandchildren.
Joan married William Steyh in Gillette, Wyo., on Aug. 24, 1985; he survives.
Also surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Sheri and Jim Starcevich of Butte and Lisa and Brian Hildreth of Billings; grand children: Jackie, Nicole and Jimmy Starcevich, Rheannon Murphy, Derek, Cody and Devon Hildreth; Bill's daugh ter and son-in-law, Susan and Scott Irvin and their daughter Kinsey of Lewistown, his son and daughter-in-law, William T. and Judy Steyh and their children Marissa and Christopher Steyh of Butte. Other survivors include her sisters, Dee Ann Pattinson of Dewey and Lorri Hipp of Butte; mother-in-law, Joanne Steyh of Butte; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard and Donna Steyh of Gillette, Wyo., and Roseanne Dooling of Butte.
Joan's remains have been cremated in Butte. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Friday in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home.
