Ryan Murphy has debuted another serial killer bio-series on Netflix—Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story—and commenters on social media are begging for viewers and showrunners to stop turning murderers into sex symbols.
Evan Peters, who plays Murphy’s Dahmer, isn’t intentionally positioning himself as a romantic hero. But he is a conventionally attractive leading man—something that seems to take precedence in the eyes of some viewers. The real-life Dahmer was a rapist and killer who sought out vulnerable victims, predominantly Black men, and was convicted in 1991 of killing 17 boys and men over the course of 13 years.
“Let’s not romanticize Jeffrey Dahmer just because he is played by Evan Peters. Remember the victims,” wrote one person on Twitter, with a thread on each of the people killed by Dahmer. “If you’re thirsting over Jeffery Dahmer please block me that’s weird as hell there is nothing hot about that man,” wrote another.
