When two guys tried to mess with director Kevin Smith's daughter, he fought back. With cake. Let him explain. As told to Kate Branch.

I was leaving the Fashion Square mall in the Valley when my wife, Jen, called. Our 16-year-old daughter, Harley, had been waiting for an Uber outside Starbucks, Jen explained, when a car pulled up with two guys in it: The driver says, “Did you call for an Uber?” Harley goes, “Yeah, who are you here for?” The guy says, “Did you call for an Uber or not?” My kid is like, “Yeah, but you’re not the driver pictured on my phone.” He goes, “Just get in.” Harley said no a third time, and the guys pulled off. Fast.

It was my wife’s worst nightmare: Our daughter, who has been kept out of harm’s way for 16 years, had had such a close call. (The kid is way more quick-witted than me; I would have just gotten in. For all we know, she saved her own life that day.) I was like, “Why do people have to be assholes?”

“This isn’t people, Kevin,” she said. “This is two men, trying to trick our daughter into a car.”

She was right: It was predatory behavior, and my kid was prey. She's safe, but those scumbags are still out there and maybe trying it on some other girl. I suggested to Harley that she share her story on social media to alert folks to what sounded like an insidious abduction scheme. As a guy who is sometimes a man myself, I also just wanted to do something for her because at that moment her view of humanity—let’s be honest, man-ity—was totally f--ked. So I went to SusieCakes on Ventura Boulevard and got “Sorry Men Suck” inscribed on a cake. When I presented it to her, she snapped a pic and posted it to Instagram:
