Kate Middleton and Michelle Obama Alter Off-the-Rack Clothing

To tour a Manhattan school, she wore this Goat coat that looks like it's been lengthened. The shot of her clearly shows a horizontal seam on the bottom half of the coat, whereas you can't see any such detail on the picture of the coat on the brand's site. The panel was likely added to, again, turn the piece into a coat dress (I didn't spy a single pic from the event where she had the coat off or unbuttoned). The extra length also allowed her to kneel and talk to students, pick up flowers, and get into her car without risking any fashion mishaps.

Rather than hemming, Mrs. Obama customized this Talbot's dress by adding a ribbon at the waist and a layer of visible black crinoline underneath, two touches that were totally hers according to WWD. The dress was custom-made for her to begin with, but I kind of love how she added some additional personal flair right at the end. Also interesting: Designers started with a pre-existing version of the dress but removed the cap sleeves since the First Lady has such fab arms and she needs to show them off.

Have you heard the "get your clothes to a tailor!" advice too? Have you had anything subtly altered so it fit your body better?

PS: Sorry to burst your shopping bubble, but Kate's Tory Burch coat is totally sold out.

PPS: My other favorite tailoring story was this one, where I found out you can have sweaters, button-downs, and more altered.
