Grieving mom still searching for answers months after son’s slaying – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — There is no greater pain than losing a child. Mary McCullough has lost two.

First, her daughter Janet in June, to cancer. Six weeks later, police said someone murdered her 23-year-old son, Andrew McCullough.

While holding the pamphlet from her son’s memorial service, she reflected on his personality on Thursday.

“He would laugh and joke. He was a happy-go-lucky person,” she told Channel 9.

Andrew McCullough was killed around midnight on July 17, 2020, near his mother’s neighborhood along Bramblewood Drive in southwest Charlotte.

Mary McCullough said her son went out for a walk and never came back. Neighbors heard gunfire and called 911. When CMPD officers arrived, they found Andrew McCullough in a backyard. He has been shot several times.

Andrew’s death left the neighborhood shocked and his family devastated. They never got to say goodbye, including his children.

“There is two little boys out there that would never get to grow up and be with their father,” Mary McCullough said.

Police said no one saw the shooter and the investigation hasn’t moved much. That’s why CMPD is offering a reward to track down the killer.

“We’ve got to live with it every day and I want to know, ‘How can you sleep?’” Mary McCullough said. “I just hope that whoever did it comes forward and if anybody knows who did it come forward.”

Police have not released a possible motive in the crime.
