Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers lost a significant comeback on Sunday night. They lost against the LA Lakers 121-112, after leading by almost 30 at one point. Patrick Beverley, a guard for the Lakers, reflected on the performance after the game. He believed his game-winning defense against Damian Lillard was underappreciated. Instead, the story only stated that he had a bad night.
Speaking in a press conference, Beverley fired shots at reporters for undermining his defense. He said, “If he would have cooked me you would have said ‘I couldn’t guard him.’ But he misses a couple shots and it’s a ‘slow shooting night.’ ‘Good job on Dame’ sounds better.”

Lillard responded to these remarks on Twitter after seeing them. He compared Beverley to the character Flip from the basketball-themed 1990 film Above the Rim, which starred a stellar ensemble. Bernie Mac, a well-known comedian, portrayed Flip as a homeless man.
Lillard probably made an extra effort to respond to Beverley because of what he did during the contest. The seasoned point guard was seen making fun of the Blazers star’s well-known “Dame Time” celebration after the Lakers had managed to get back into the game. Beverley and Lillard’s conflict started on the court Sunday night when they got into an argument while at the free-throw line during the second quarter of the game, which prompted a referee to intervene and stop the free-throw attempt.
Patrick Beverley’s defense against Damian Lillard
Despite scoring 24 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out ten assists, Damian Lillard had a terrible night. The star player for the Portland Trail Blazers only managed to shoot 29.4% overall and a dismal 23.1% from beyond the arc. He scored over half of his points against the LA Lakers by converting free throws.
Patrick Beverley was Lillard’s primary defender for over eight minutes of the entire contest. He made 2-7 field goal attempts throughout that span and 1-6 three-point attempts. Beverly was one of the guys Lillard had the most success against, despite the fact that he only made five field goal attempts all night.
It is not unexpected that Beverley is on the mike attempting to seek credit because he has relied on his defense to support himself in the NBA. Lillard, one of the league’s top scorers, was slowed down just enough for his side to prevail. Even if the Lakers veteran had a bad shooting night, he still deserves some praise.
Lillard’s reaction most likely sprang from pent-up resentment. Hearing additional trash talk after that did in fact push him over the line, especially considering how that particular night went for him and the Blazers.
