As a highly accomplished actor with standout roles across television and film, Pedro Pascal has developed an unconventional yet effective technique for memorizing script dialogue. In a recent interview with the SAG-AFTRA foundation, Pascal opened up about his intense ritual of scribbling down abstract cues to imprint lines word-for-word. This elaborate new memorization approach was forged early in his career after an on-set flub left Pascal determined to never slip up again.

“This psychotic example, a physical example that I have now, that I have to do to learn my lines,” Pascal explained, displaying pages of incomprehensible scrawls representing his script lines.

Though abstract to outsiders, this elaborate ritual helps Pascal thoroughly imprint dialogue after an early acting trauma left him scarred.

Pascal looked back on an early acting job where he failed to properly learn his lines. When cameras started rolling, he humiliatingly froze up, leaving co-stars and crew stunned in an agonizingly awkward moment. This harrowing flub haunts Pascal to this day, making him ultra-diligent about memorization.

“You just use the first letter of each word and kind of like sort of these towers, these like columns I guess. it’s just a very very tedious way of making yourself learn the line.” Pascal confessed.

He further added, “It isn’t even sort of that artistic, it’s really kind of like a technical way that I had to acquire because of that horrible experience of forgetting your lines.”

Those incomprehensible notebooks help ensure he never endures such profound embarrassment again.
