Stefanos Tsitsipas did not have a great time in New York as he crashed out of the year’s last Grand Slam after a defeat in the second round. He did not fare well in China as well. The Greek had a first-round exit in Beijing while he could only go till the third round and that too after getting a bye in the first round. With criticism mounting, the world no.7 decided to go back to basics and hence he entered the European Open as the top seed.

While he got a bue in the first round, Tsitsipas edged past Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round. He beat the Dutch 7-5, 6-3. In the third round and his second match, the Greek ace took down Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets. Tsitsipas beat Hanfmann 6-3, 6-3. Now, in the semifinals, he will be up against an upbeat Fils who has won his two games quite comprehensively.

Like Tsitsipas, Fils also got a bye in the first round, and in the second, he faced Mark Lajal whom the Frenchman beat 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2). In the quarterfinals, Fils thrashed Juan Pablo Varillas 6-0, 6-3. Now, he will face the top seed of the tournament in the semifinals and it will be interesting to see how the Frenchman fares.
