Indianapolis - Gov. Mitch Daniels has signed papers completing a land swap that will allow Camp Atterbury to expand in Johnson County and allow the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to create the Deer Creek Fish and Wildlife Area in Putnam County.
The deed signed by Daniels on Monday authorizes the DNR to transfer 1,250 acres of Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area to the Military Department of Indiana. The Military Department will use the land to construct barracks and administrative offices for Camp Atterbury.
The remaining 5,000 acres of Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area will remain open to public use.
The DNR received nearly 2,000 acres from the Department of Correction to develop Deer Creek. It will open to fishing, hunting and other activities Oct. 29.
