SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WTHR) — One of my favorite parts of these Chuck's Big Adventure is trying different foods from fantastic local restaurants. Photographer Steve Rhodes worked at WNDU in South Bend before joining us at the big 1-3, and I trusted he would take me to someplace unique, original and quintessentially South Bend.
Rocco's is a must-visit when in northern Indiana.
Rocco Ameduri was an Italian prisoner of war (POW) captured by American forces and housed in camps in the US. After World War II, Rocco stayed in the U.S. and worked as a cook at Notre Dame. He had a dream to build his own restaurant though and in 1951, he started his own pizza palace. The place has grown from 12 seats to 150 and is a Notre Dame and Michiana tradition. The same family lovingly serves the same Italian food that Rocco did 60 years ago. Everything from pasta to pizza to delicious sandwiches fill the menu.
I loved it. The pizza was fantastic, the service was spot on and the staff were friendly.
My two word review buon appetito!
