Bargersville police officers save woman from burning car

Police said a woman was trapped after her vehicle crashed into a tree at Bluff Creek Parkway and Stones Crossing Road.

BARGERSVILLE, Ind. — A woman is safe after the quick and brave actions of two Bargersville police officers.

Her rescue was caught on camera, where every minute counted.

Police said a woman was trapped after her vehicle crashed into a tree at Bluff Creek Parkway and Stones Crossing Road on Dec. 8.

Officers Cody St. John and Joshua Wheat were first on scene.

"Here, come to me. Can you get this way?" St. John said to the woman in the vehicle.

As St. John tried to pull the woman to safety, Wheat took a fire extinguisher to help put out the flames coming from the engine.

St. John attempted to help the woman crawl toward the rear passenger side of the vehicle, but she’s got stuck and was badly hurt. She tried her best to break free.

St. John then rushed to the back of the car and lifted up the hatch.

"OK, climb to me. Come to me. Come on. Straight out here to me," St. John said to the woman.

Wheat got the fire out as the woman desperately tried to break free.

"I'm trying. I hit both my knees and my ankle,” she said.

St. John calmed his voice.

"You're almost there. You're almost there. Keep coming to me," St. John said to the woman.

13News spoke with Wheat by phone, who said his fellow officer did a good job keeping the woman calm through a traumatic event.

His main goal was to make sure the fire didn’t spread.

“We talk about those scenarios in the past all the time to exercise our brains,” Wheat said.

They're both thankful and grateful the woman survived.

When the woman was carried out of the vehicle, she could be heard saying, "Thank you, Jesus."

“When you save a life, you ponder on that for a little bit. We’re grateful. We did our jobs to the best of our abilities,” Wheat said.
